You weren’t wrong in your conclusions on the effectiveness of religion on treating addiction.

Evidence Based Practice Indicators and Outcomes for Alcohol and other Drug Treatment Interventions – more specific to the immense superiority of medication assisted treatment–methadone, buprenorphine (suboxone/subutex) for opiated or disulfiram for alcohol–over any strictly psychosocial therapy.
Interestingly, amongst psychosocial therapies, 12-step programs (i.e. religion) is on the lower end of effectiveness. And really, compared to actually effective treatments like listed above, comparing psychosocial therapies is like deciding which player should win the silver slugger award for pitcher. If you can make it over the Mendoza line, your a star in this category.

The Trouble with Morality: The Effects of 12-Step Discourse on Addicts’ Decision-Making.
Within 12-step groups, any participation in medication assisted therapy is scoffed at and looked down upon. Despite this, many do use both simultaneously, but keep their use of methadone or suboxone hidden from their peers.
It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where those who achieve sobriety in this situation will credit the religion, and not the medication. They are already conditioned to hide the fact they are on methadone or suboxone from others, so what will they assert is responsible for their recovery? “Their higher Power” of course.
