Now I only write this in because you guys ASKED for pedantic corrections and answers to possibly rhetorical questions.
Most biologists that I know are molecular biologists. I am a biochemist, which is also technically a biologist. If someone refers to themselves as an evolutionary biologist, it means they took the easiest bio track next to Generl Bio majors.
Regardless though, any biology major certainly takes courses regarding evolution, so Jindalls comments still don’t make any sense. Molecular biologists and biochemists tend to work in biotech, whereas evolutionary biologists do research on… Uhm I dunno something more specifically involving evolution.
And while were on the topic of pedantic corrections which YOU asked for… In the diatribe talking about the Broadway show Book of Mormon, Noah says “The craziest cult the US has yet to produce.” This would mean that Mormonism has not yet been produced. What you meant I think was “the craziest cult the UD has yet produced.” Remove the “to” and change produce to past tense.
I thank you for the last correction, but I think that the first one misses the point. When I contrasted “evolutionary” biologist to a “Lamarckian” or “Saltational” biologist, the point I was making was that there is no field of biology that excludes evolution (which I think we agree Jindall was implying). So in the sense that Jindall invoked it (i.e. incorrectly) evolutionary biologist would encompass all biologists who believe in evolution, and thus biochemists and microbiologists…
Agreed. But I was moreso responding to the question posed as to whether evolutionary biology was a real thing or redundant bullshit, like a historian calling himself a chronological historian or whatnot. It is definetly a specific field of biology, and is not even the most common one.
Perhaps too my writing this comes from the fact that I could foresee a situation where say I’m at a party and Im being asked about my degree, and I’m being flattered by the attention (clearly by smoking hot intellectual polisci-communications majors). Then at a later point in the night I make some ignorant gaff about an obscure factoid which it stems from me not knowing some extremely particular facet of evolutionary theory—I could potentially see myself making excuses for myself saying “well I didn’t study evolutionary biology…”
Right on. If it came across as though I was posing that question, I apologize for the confusion. Again, he was being asked if he believed in evolution, not to answer any specific question about it. I think we can both agree that dodging that question by pointing out that one isn’t an “evolutionary” biologist is as asinine as the aforementioned “chronological historian” line.
